A mom got pregnant while already pregnant; a condition called superfetation. The second pregnancy happens days or weeks after the first.
When she discovered that she had gotten pregnant again while already pregnant, she asked her doctor for an explanation. Her doctor told her that she likely got ovulated twice, released two eggs, and got fertilized at different times, The New York Post reports.
Her doctor said that considering her pregnancy journey, what happened to her is 100 percent a miracle.
Three previous miscarriages
She gave birth to her son Wyatt in 2018. A year after, they wanted to expand their family. Unfortunately, Cara had three miscarriages, one of which almost killed her.
She was lying in bed, and there was a lot of blood when she went to the bathroom. She called her doctors and told them what was happening. The doctor told her that as long as you are not bleeding often, then it's normal. But her husband did not think it was normal. He rushed to the hospital. By the time she got to the ER, her pressure had dipped.
She blacked out. When she regained her consciousness, the doctor told her that the baby got stuck in her cervix and she was bleeding out. Had she stayed home minutes longer, she would have died.
Cara had to get blood transfusions and therapy to cope with the traumatic experience.
After the harrowing experience, she was scared to get pregnant again. However, she was certain that she wanted to have more kids. Not losing faith, she put her fears aside and tried to get pregnant again, as per Metro.
Another pregnancy
The frustrated mom found out that she was pregnant in March 2021 again. After five weeks, she went back to the doctor for a scan. When she had a follow-up scan two weeks after to check for a heartbeat, the doctor was surprised that there were two fetuses.
The ultrasound showed that she was expecting two babies conceived two weeks apart. Cara admitted that she broke down and cried. She was overwhelmed, confused, but very happy. Her husband, on the other hand, was in shock.
The former teacher gave birth to Baby Colson Winhold and his little brother Cayden six minutes apart on October 25, 2021.
Superfetation
Cara said that she could not think of other explanations for having twins as it does not run in their family. The babies were also conceived naturally.
While the new babies are technically twins, there is a four-pound weight difference between the brothers. The happy mom says she has to buy two clothes and nappies in different sizes.
As per Verywell Family, twins from superfetation differ in maturity, having been conceived days or weeks apart. Superfetation is observed in animals, but it is infrequent in humans, and there are only a few documented cases in the medical literature.
In 2009, Julia Grovenburg of Arkansas was reported to have two babies due to superfetation. The babies are two and a half weeks apart.
In 2005, The Journal of Pediatrics recorded superfetation in a triplet pregnancy of a 32-year-old woman who became pregnant with the help of fertility treatments.
