Hollywood star Jennifer Lopez is speaking out about her complicated relationship with her mom, Guadalupe "Lupe" Rodriguez, claiming that the matriarch beat her when she was a kid, according to a report by the New York Post.
The 52-year-old pop superstar made the stunning claim in her new Netflix documentary, "Halftime," saying in a scene: "She [Rodriguez] did what she had to do to survive, and it made her strong, but it also made her tough. She beat the s-t out of you."
Rodriguez also appeared in the film, admitting she was hard not only to Lopez but also to her two sisters, Leslie and Lynda. The 76-year-old matriarch, who immigrated from Puerto Rico, raised her three daughters in Bronx, New York, alongside her husband David, whom she divorced once her girls were all grown up.
Lopez left home at the age of 18
Rodriguez says in the Netflix movie, "I always had the highest expectations of them. It wasn't to be critical. It was only to show you that you could do better. Jennifer, she gave me the hardest time to tell you the truth. We butted heads a lot."
The "Love Don't Cost a Thing" crooner left home at the age of 18 after repeatedly clashing with her mother over her future, according to Fox News. J.Lo confessed that she was not focused on her school work back then, saying she was distracted by dancing, which caused tension between them.
Lopez recalled that her mom was like, "If you're gonna live in this house, you're gonna get your education." She said that they got into a bad fight one night, and she decided to just leave.
Rodriguez stated in the film that she always wanted her three daughters to have an education so they would not rely on men. She admitted in the documentary that she was far from the perfect mother, but the one thing she can always say is that everything she did, she did with their best interest at heart.

Lopez and her mom now enjoy a much smoother relationship
Lopez described her mom in the new documentary as a "complicated" person, but the mother and daughter pair now enjoy a much smoother relationship, according to Marca. The emotional scenes between Lopez and Rodriguez are among the many candid moments captured in the doc "Halftime," which was largely recorded in the lead-up to J.Lo's iconic Super Bowl performance with fellow pop star Shakira back in 2020.
At one point in the documentary, the pissed-off pop diva is fuming that she and Shakira are forced to share the stage for the hyped NFL halftime show. Lopez asked the NFL for more time to do her set justice, saying, "This was the worst idea in the world."
The starlet is also seen breaking down following news she had failed to be nominated for an Academy Award for her role in "Hustlers," despite being widely regarded as a shoo-in for the honor at the Oscars.
