Children either spend their summer chilling at home or going to summer camp but not Jayce Berfect, a 7-year-old from Louisiana, who launched his own trash cleaning business, Trash 2 Curb, with a secured Limited Liability Company (LLC) registration.
Jayce was inspired to establish Trash 2 Curb after realizing he needed to get a headstart on his college fund. He thought of collecting trash because his father worked as a garbage collector.
"I wanted to earn money because I know I'll need it for college," the child said, per WBRZ. The student from Duplessis Primary School has dreams of becoming an astronaut when he grows up.
What is Trash 2 Curb?
Mom Jamyra Berfect encouraged her son to be active this summer. However, when she asked Jayce how he wanted to spend this long school break, going to camp was the least of his desires. Jamyra also did not want her son sitting at home just playing video games.
Initially, the mom thought Jayce could participate in the activities of her community church, the Ascension Parish, but the boy came up with a better idea. He was already taking out the trash at home, so the 7-year-old thought he could do it for other households and earn.
Speaking with WAFB, the mother explained Trash 2 Curb's system. Jayce takes out their neighbors' trash a day before the garbage collectors pass their street. He also washes the trash bins for an additional service fee.
At the start of his business, Jayce worked just two households but gained more clients and had to hire a few co-workers to attend to the demand. He's also slowly gaining valuable work experience and has formed an appreciation for hard work that pays off.
Jamyra is proud that her son is getting good raves for his business, which has an active Facebook page. The mother said they are also getting calls from other parents who "wish their kids would do stuff," similar to Jayce's business idea.
A hardworking kid
Trash 2 Curb inspired a Texas child to follow its business model. The Berfect family isn't against the idea because it helps kids develop positive skills and avoid exposure to violence. Despite her son's original goal to save up for college, he's soon learning that owning and running a business is not just about money.
Meanwhile, the mother relayed that Jayce's schedule is packed for the summer, but he enjoys the work. The child gets some time to rest and play after a day's work, so everything has been going well. Kayla Jo Melancon, one of their neighbors and client, said that the child is setting himself up for success because he knows how to work hard.
When school resumes, Jayce will have to slow down on his work on Trash 2 Curb, with Jamyra likely taking over temporarily.
