Dr. Kristine Smalls received her Psy.D (Doctor of Psychology) from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine on July 29.
Kendra Busbee, Kristine's mother, decided to rent a digital billboard to publicly recognize and honor her daughter's achievement. The New Jersey mom couldn't be more proud of her daughter's attainment.
The 52-year-old mom said that she is beyond proud of her daughter and there are no exact words to describe what she feels upon knowing that her daughter will receive a such biggest achievement. Her daughter did everything a mother could wish their child could do and the mother wish nothing but only the best for her.
Busbee told Good Morning America (GMA) that she first got the idea of renting a billboard when her daughter mentioned that one of her friend's mom had done something similar. At first, she didn't mind the idea but eventually, she changed her mind. The proudest mom started making phone calls and soon reached out to someone that opened up a bakery the owner then immediately instructed the mom to someone that she used for her billboard and according to her, she was offered an amazing price.
Showed the power of a mother's love through renting a billboard
The mother soon realized what she truly wanted and what she wanted was a billboard for her daughter. She was up late at night when drawing her vision in her little notebook and wrote everything that she want to say as she was so excited.
The billboard was kept as a surprise from Smalls and on the day the billboard was set, she arranged a meeting at a parking lot along with friends and family to witness the billboard. The mom then asked her daughter to with her to see friends at a pub which was actually located near the billboard.
When things are all set, she told Smalls that she moved the car and as they were walking to the car, the fresh graduate told her mom that she doesn't know what was going on as she also sees everybody standing outside of the car and thought it was only a COVID party for her graduation. The doctor couldn't understand what was happening and so the mother pointed out the billboard. Kristine at first couldn't believe what was happening but soon realized that it was an awesome surprise.
According to ABC News, the billboard showed a huge photo of Smalls in her graduation cap and tassel and read, "Let Me Re-Introduce Myself... Dr. Kristine S. Smalls -- Dr. Smiles -- Look what good came out of Camden!"
Publicly recognizing daughter's achievement
Smalls just stood there in shock while the proud mom hugged her and said "We did it, baby. You did it." She then played Jay-Z's Let Me Reintroduce Myself" which refers to the rapper's 2003 song "Public Service Announcement (Interlude).
Busbee felt the presence of her late mom, Doretha Busbee, aside from the community who showed and gathered support for her daughter. Doretha passed away when Kristine was still at Kean University, where she took her college degree. According to Kendra, her mom was attached to her children.
Nonetheless, she was proud of her daughter. She paid $1,250 to rent the billboard but according to her, the impact is priceless, per Action News.
