As "Waka Waka" singer, Shakira, will be appearing on the October 2022 digital cover of ELLE, she opened up about protecting her children amidst a split from football star Gerard Piqué. The two shares sons, Sasha, 7, and Milan, 9, per People.
The "Whenever, Wherever" singer explained that it's hard to talk about the issue as she is still going through it, noting that the presence of paparazzi outside her home and the various headlines have made a difficult situation in the public eye much harder.
The 45-year-old singer said there's almost no place for her to hide with her kids except in her own house. The paparazzi hinder her and her family from doing regular family activities, even just taking a walk. The "Can't Remember to Forget You" singer said that despite the challenging circumstances, she had done everything to conceal the situation from her children.
"I try to do it and to protect them because that's my number one mission in life," she added.
The former couple has to do everything for the two children
The situation in Barcelona, where, the former "The Voice" coach cultivated roots in support of a long-time partner's career and her children's education, has discouraged Shakira as a mother.
The Colombian singer said her children deserve a normal life. Almost everyone is speculating about all aspects of their lives, specifically the kids' lives, and many of them are not true. The singer faces challenges as she establishes a co-parenting relationship with Piqué.
Regardless of how things ended with them and how they see each other as ex-partners now, Shakira noted he is still the father of her children, and they have a job to do for the amazing little boys, and it has to be great as always for their sake. The "She Wolf" singer has faith that she and her former partner will eventually figure out what is best for their future, their respective dreams in life, and a fair solution for everyone involved. The "Try Everything" singer only hopes for the best and would appreciate it if she and her family were given the space to do things privately as they need it.
Shakira considers the situation the toughest and darkest hours of her life, but music has brought her light, ELLE reported.
The "Te Felicito" singer says she's handling the situation well
The "La Bicicleta" singer reflected on the time she's taken away from her career, revealing she has no regrets. The singer knows that as a couple, you have to sacrifice one thing for the relationship to work; she does not regret sacrificing her career. She willingly relocated to Spain to support her former partner so he could play football and win titles, adding that it was a sacrifice of love.
Her sacrifice made her a present mom to her kids, noting that she has an amazing unbreakable bond with them.
However, Piqué disagreed with Shakira's statement and accused the singer of playing a victim, per The News.
Shakira claimed she handled the situation well, especially as a mother still dealing with her emotions about the split.
