Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin has settled a lawsuit filed by the family of Halyna Hutchins. She was the cinematographer shot to death last year on the set of their movie "Rust." Representatives from both sides of the civil action announced the settlement on Wednesday, October 5.

Hutchins was fatally shot, and director Joel Souza was wounded in the incident in New Mexico on October 21 when a live round was discharged from a gun held by Baldwin, who shares producer and screen credits on the suspended film, according to Reuters.

Hutchins' family filed a lawsuit in February, accusing Baldwin and others involved in the movie of cost-cutting measures and reckless behavior that led to the unfortunate tragedy months ago at Bonanza Creek Ranch, located in Santa Fe County.

Matthew Hutchins named executive producer of "Rust"

Baldwin's attorney Luke Nikas said that everyone wants to do what is best for Halyna's son throughout this challenging process. Nikas added that they are grateful to everyone who contributed to the settlement, providing a resolution to this painful and tragic situation.

The settlement's financial terms were not released during Wednesday's announcement. However, the victim's widower, Matthew Hutchins, has now been named an executive producer of "Rust," which is expected to resume filming this coming January, according to NBC News.

Matthew Hutchins said in a statement that he has no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame to the producers of the film or Mr. Baldwin. He added that all of them believe Halyna's death was a terrible accident. He is grateful that the entertainment community and the producers of this film have come together to pay tribute to his wife's final work.

Souza to remain as director of the film

Souza, who was 48 at the time of the shooting, said that he has agreed to resume his role as director of the movie. He said that the people lucky enough to spend time and work with Halyna knew that she was kind, creative, exceedingly talented, and an incredible source of positive energy.

Souza's wish is that the world had gotten to know his deceased colleague under different circumstances. Souza made it clear that he is returning to the "Rust" set only with the blessing of Halyna's widow, Matthew, according to Deadline.

He said that in his attempts to heal, any decision to return to finish directing the film could only make sense for him if it was done with the involvement of Matt and the Hutchins family. He added that even though it is certainly bittersweet, he is pleased that together, they will now complete what Halyna and he started.

He said that his every effort on this film would be devoted to honoring Halyna's legacy and making her proud, and it is a privilege to see this through on her behalf.
