The rapper thought pregnancy was not for her, especially since she was over 40.
Da Brat and wife Jesseca "Judy" Harris-Dupart exclusively revealed to People last week. They publicly announced on Sherri Shepherd's daytime talk show Sherri that they are expecting a baby. The rapper is currently 18 weeks pregnant.
Wife Harris-Dupart, 41, is already a mother of three from her previous relationship. However, for the 48-year-old "Funkdafied" rapper, she thought that having kids was not part of the plan.
"I never thought I was going to have kids. I just thought it wasn't in the cards for me. I've had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn't get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn't going to happen for me," Da Brat expressed.
All these changed when she met her wife, she revealed. She started to look at life differently and suddenly wanted a little Da Brat with her, someone they could love unconditionally and raise together.
She thought nothing could come out of her
The couple's road to motherhood started after their wedding on February 2 last year, the same time Harris-Dupart, CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Products, launched a new hair line inspired by her partner's iconic braids and hairstyles.
The marketing tagline for the new product and collaboration, "We're extending our family!" made them realize that they both want to extend their family and get pregnant as soon as possible, given Da Brat's age.
Da Brat carrying the baby was not the immediate plan, though. The rapper admitted they still had a "tug-of-war" on the womb that should be used. She has this thought that nothing can come out of her. Yet, Harris-Dupart convinced her nonetheless, stating that she needed the experience and that the baby would be safe as the rapper was "so nurturing," People reported.
The rapper admitted that the pregnancy and getting there was "quite a journey" and that it allowed them to learn many things about women over 40.
Challenges in the pregnancy journey
In the end, Da Brat was grateful that she carried the child, especially since Harris-Dupart had life-and-death health complications after her egg retrieval procedure. Blood clots formed in her lungs, and she was hospitalized for hyperstimulation ovarian syndrome.
According to Decider, the rapper shared with Shepherd how the thought of losing her wife scared her so much.
Da Brat also revealed that she experienced quite challenging health issues of her own. She needed to undergo surgery for fibroids and polyps removal before her procedure for embryo transfer.
Then the couple was heartbroken when they went through a miscarriage, especially since the rapper was already so excited to be carrying a baby inside her that she never knew she wanted.
Fortunately, there were still eggs from Harris-Dupart that were left, and they did the procedure again using the sperm of an anonymous donor, who they describe as "an eager entrepreneur."
Now that she is in her second trimester, she shared that she does not have any morning sickness or crazy cravings. There are just two weird things she's going through now that she's pregnant. First, she always feels exhausted and sleepy, and second, she cries at everything, even at the mere fact of watching someone win at American Idol. Now, she laughs at the thought that she is tougher than this.
