'Sherlock' Season 4 Premiere & End Date: Steven Moffat Reveals Cause Of Series Conclusion, 'We Are Going To Stop, That’s What We Are Going To Do'

Steven Moffat, the creator of well-loved science fiction series such as "Doctor Who" and "Sherlock," reveals in an interview the only thing that will make them stop filming “Sherlock.” Moffat sat down with Variety and discussed the future of "Doctor Who" and "Sherlock."

According to Moffat, unlike "Doctor Who," where another actor can play the character of the doctor and everything can be replaced, in "Sherlock," the show's future lies on Benedict Cumberbatch's decision if he stays or not.

Moffat told Variety, "Once Benedict Cumberbatch gives up ‘Sherlock,’ what are we going to do? We are going to stop, that’s what we are going to do."

"Most shows have a built-in mortality. But here is a show that sheds us all like scales; a show that can make you feel everything except indispensable. It will carry on forever, because you can replace every part of it," he added.

However, for fans of the great spy detective by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, fret not. In 2014, Cumberbatch had an interview with USA Today, where the acclaimed British actor revealed how long he is planning to play the character of Sherlock Holmes.

Cumberbatch revealed to the news outlet, "I'll keep doing [the show] as long as [Sherlock] grows, as long as I feel he's developing and there's stuff we're all being challenged by and that's being loyal to the original stories as well."

In the interview with USA Today, Cumberbatch also credited the show for doing a lot for him. "I won't say it changed my life, because I had a huge break at the same time as this role first came to fruition. It was sort of the perfect storm of all mediums coming together at the same time, television, film and theatre, even some radio," Cumberbatch said.

Vogue also previously quoted Cumberbatch saying that if "Sherlock" keeps on upholding and maintaining the quality of the show, he will never get tired of playing the great detective.

“I really, really love my job,” says Cumberbatch to Vogue. “I love sets. I love crews. I love theaters. I love audiences.”

Meanwhile, Parent Herald previously reported that “Sherlock” will have a one-off Victorian episode titled “The Abominable Bride,” per a recent tweet from PBS Masterpiece. The standalone special will be aired on Jan. 1, 2016 via BBC One and PBS Masterpiece. “Sherlock” fans may also catch the episode in cinemas across the U.K., per Digital Spy.
