Gal Gadot's “Wonder Woman” is currently in the works, and Warner Bros is preparing to make it big.
According to an unnamed source for The Wrap, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman is having negotiations to play the role of “a high-ranking Amazonian warrior” in the Wonder Woman movie set for release in 2017.
Although the potential role to be portayed is still unconfirmed, Screen Rant reports that there could be no higher-ranking Amazonian warrior than Diana's mother herself, Queen Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons.
According to the comic book origin story, Queen Hippolyta either had Diana by forming her out of clay, or by having a short affair with Zeus, making Diana a demigod.
SR adds that making guesses as to what Kidman's role is will be dependent on what director Patty Jenkins is after. If she would emphasize Diana's origins as something divine, then it might be likely that Kidman will play Queen Hippolyta.
Here's the summary of how Hippolyta had Diana, according to SR:
“To make a long story short, Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons desires a child, fashioning one out of clay, and begging the gods to bless it with life. The gods hear her request, and grant it. Since the society is one of only women, Diana takes on the title of not just princess, but Daughter of the Amazons.”
Although some key elements such as the clay, prayer, and Diana's fatherless birth remained the same, the origin story was changed. Brian Azzarello, in rebooting Wonder Woman's character, remade Diana as the daughter of Zeus, and the origin story as a lie told by her mother for her own protection.
This makes Diana easily line up with the likes of mythical heroes like Hercules and Achilles, and it's a story that's more likely to be included in the DC Universe.
Producer Charles Roven gave comments regarding new heroes that will be introduced while discussing Batman V Superman:
“Well Wonder Woman’s in it, we know that. She has powers, she’s a goddess. She’s half… she’s a demigod. Her father was Zeus.”
That's it for now. Fans will just have to wait regarding Nicole Kidman's involvement in the movie. Expect to get more details regarding the "Wonder Woman" solo movie in the near future.
Patty Jenkins will be directing "Wonder Woman." Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Charles Roven and Richard Suckle will be producing. Jason Fuchs ("Pan") has written the script.
Diana will be first seen in “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” next year, and will have her solo movie released on June 23, 2017.
