“Independence Day: Resurgence,” the sequel to the 1996 movie that had Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum, has now released its trailer that features new and returning cast.
Earlier, it was reported that director Roland Emmerich promised that the trailer will be coming in December – a trailer that will excite fans.
Entertainment Weekly reported that the trailer was released Sunday and showed what happened 20 years after the first movie came out.
“I see them in my dreams,” actor Bill Pullman said in the trailer. “They’re coming back.”
The sequel's plot revolves around humanity's last stand against the aliens who have returned after two decades. In those 20 years, humans have come together and, using recovered alien technology, developed new weapons and an enormous defense program that can be used just in case they do return.
Indeed, the trailer showed that they are set to return. When they do, the humans find that once again they are still ill-equipped against the threat.
“I spent 20 years trying to get us ready for this,” Goldblum's David Levinson said in the trailer. “We used their technology to strengthen our planet, but it won’t be enough.”
According to an IndieWire Blog, 20th Century Fox is planning on releasing two sequels, of which “Resurgence” is already included. One character who isn't returning, however, is Col. Steven Hiller, played by Will Smith.
Cinema Blend reported that Fox has unveiled that Col. Hiller died in a giant explosion while testing some new technology. According to the movie news outlet, his fate has been revealed in WarOf1996, a website dedicated to explaining the history of the alien invasion, created the same time the trailer was opened.
Here's how WarOf1996 explained Hiller's death:
“While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller.”
“He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan,” the website continued.
A more reasonable explanation, according to CB, as to why Smith won't be in the sequel is the fact that he's too expensive for the production. As it is, fans will do better not to expect his return in “Independence Day: Resurgence” or in the future sequel. Those who want to see Smith will see him in “Suicide Squad” next year.
The “Independence Day: Resurgence” cast also includes returnees Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner. Newcomers include Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, William Fichtner, Joey King, Sela Ward and more.
“Independence Day: Resurgence” comes to theaters June 24, 2016.
