Bringing another human into the world changes you as a person; but it can also be your one-way ticket to getting that promotion in your workplace. Scientists believe that contrary to the stereotype, motherhood makes a woman smarter and more organized.
For decades, women have always been at a disadvantage economically because bearing a child (and consequently caring for one) presents as a road block for professional growth especially for business.
Because of their duty to the human race, women are taken less seriously in the workplace because they regularly take time off from work to give birth to their children, care for a sick child, or attend graduations or birthday parties. Even with the more active participation of the modern man in parenting, women are still viewed with a lesser value in the workplace because they are mothers.
However, more scientific data prove that mothers make for better employees. "Baby Brain," as people call it, doesn't make the woman sloppy and distracted at work, but it rewires the brain to make her think more strategically, handle stress better, and make faster, more efficient decisions.
"Being able to be more efficient in your decision-making, being emotionally resilient, maybe being able to engage in different strategies to solve a problem... that sounds like a wonderful executive or manager to me," explained Kelly Lambert, a research scientist, told New Scientist (via HNGN).
While there are seperate research claiming that the brain shrinks up to 7 per cent during pregnancy, according to The Telegraph UK, experts found that it re-expands as new mothers learn to manage stress and be more empathic.
University of Richmond psychology professor, Craig Kinsley, discovered that rats have developed an "improved foraging abilities and memory" after giving birth in order to care for the newborn. Kinsley admitted that the idea came to him after watching his own wife be better at multitasking, reported Quartz.
The results are not conclusive and further research needs to be done on the subject, but scientists all agree that motherhood is a tough job. The idea that "baby brain" makes women stupid should be challenged.
