It's confirmed. Will Smith will not be attending the much-awaited 2016 Oscars following the announcement of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, on social media that she will not be at the prestigious ceremony.
ABC News reported that the 47-year old award-winning actor during an interview on "Good Morning America" has openly confirmed his support of his wife's decision in not attending the Oscars. The couple's stand in not gracing the ceremony was brought about by the revelation that the major nominations are said to be "all- whites."
According to Smith, he and his wife have discussed the matter. He said, "We're part of this community but at this current time, we're uncomfortable to stand there and say that this is OK." He further added that it would be really awkward to show up with a different leading lady.
In reference to his wife, Smith said, "She's deeply passionate and when she is moved she has to go." Smith also said that she was just happy to be married to her.
Smith believes that America's diversity makes it beautiful. However, upon looking at the series of nominations of the Oscars, he gets to think otherwise.
"Everybody is beautiful and deserving and fantastic, but it feels like it's going the wrong direction," says Smith. BBC News reported that when Smith looked at the all-white acting nominees, Smith believed that it was not reflecting that beauty.
The all-white lack of diversity acting nominees didn't only elicit a reaction from the Smith couple. Several other actors and actresses have spoken out about it. These include Lupita Nyong'o and George Clooney.
In a somewhat closing statement, Smith said, "We make movies, it's not that serious, except that it plants seeds for dreams." To this he added, "There's a disharmony that is brewing in our country and in our industry that I want no part to that."
