A 14-year-old injured himself while playing the popular YouTube game, "Duct Tape Challenge," with some friends in school. Skylar Fish was hospitalized after he hit a window frame and slammed on the pavement while trying to free himself from the duct tape wrapped around his body.
Buzzfeed reported that Sarah Fish, mother of Skylar, felt lucky that his son was still alive after the accident. Sarah has seen the severity of the injuries that Skylar sustained, and she wishes to warn other parents of the dangers that the "Duct Tape Challenge" brings.
This popular YouTube game consists of wrapping a person in duct tape, and recording the latter's attempt to free himself from the strong adhesive. For Skylar, what was initially a fun and challenging game, turned out to be one of the days that he will regret for life.
Sarah mentioned in Yahoo News, that the accident crushed one eye socket of Skylar. She said that, "It crushed his whole eye socket and pinched off nerves in his eye."
According to Sarah, there is no certainty whether Skylar will regain his vision in his left eye. Aside from this, the impact of his head on the pavement caused brain aneurysm. WebMD defines this condition as a bulging in the wall of a weak area of the artery, which supplies blood to the brain. In extreme cases, this could rupture and lead to a stroke.
On YouTube, some "Duct Tape Challenge" videos would yield about more than two million views. Others have hundreds of thousands of views.
While Skylar's condition may not bring an end to teenagers who are doing this challenge, Sarah said that, "All I can do is bring awareness, so other parents can look and see what kids are getting into."
Sarah has made it her advocacy to warn parents about the dangers that the YouTube challenge brings. She said that kids are merely looking at what's fun and cool, but they were not thinking of the consequences in the event they fall and hit their heads.
