Angelina Jolie on Motherhood: 'I Never Thought Of Myself As A Mother'

Nowadays, it's pretty hard to imagine Angelina Jolie without her brood of six children. But as it turns out, it was pretty easy for the "By the Sea" actress to imagine a life without children about 15 years ago.

Perhaps like any other career-oriented woman out there, Jolie-Pitt never really planned to have a family or any children. Apparently, Angelina Jolie's maternal instincts only began to kick in when she went to Cambodia to film the 2001 movie, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider."

Angelina's experience in Cambodia was one of the things that prompted her to become a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador and was later enlisted to fly back to the country in behalf of the organization.

"It's strange, I never wanted to have a baby," Jolie told the Associated Press. "I never wanted to be pregnant. I never babysat. I never thought of myself as a mother."

Of course, Angelina quickly had a change of mind - after playing with children at a Cambodian school. "It as suddenly very clear to me that my son was in the country, somewhere," she recalled.

Angelina Jolie eventually found her son in 2002, when she adopted Maddox - who is now 14 years old. Not just that, but Angie also created a foundation in his name, which "supports healthcare, education and conservation efforts in the rural parts of the country," as per People.

In spite of her busy schedule - juggling her U.N. Ambassador duties, being a full-time mom, and her Hollywood career - Anglelina has never cut ties with the country.

In fact, she's currently working on a film adaptation for Netflix about the Cambodian author Loung Ung's memoir, "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers."

"I was deeply affected by Loung's book," Jolie said in a statement. "It deepened forever my understanding of how children experience war and are affected by the emotional memory of it. And it helped me draw closer still to the people of Cambodia, my son's homeland."
