A 100-vehicle car crash that took place on the bridge in the English county of Kent has injured dozens of people, according to UPI.
The massive multi-car crash is being blamed on a dense fog covering the Sheppey Crossing Bridge that connects the Isle of Sheppey with the mainland part of Kent. Although officials confirmed that no one was killed and that is a "miracle", eight people were still reported to have been seriously injured. At least 60 others received minor injuries.
"There are no fatalities but ambulance crews are dealing with a large number of walking wounded casualties," said Kent Fire and Rescue Service's spokesperson. "Firefighters have used hydraulic cutting equipment to release five people from their vehicles."
Witnesses have said that it was hard to see through the fog and some people were driving either too fast or without their lights on. One witness told Kent Online, some were "driving like idiots." Another witness gave credit to a truck driver for purposely blocking the road with his truck - a move that could have saved several lives."
"He was going the other way and he is gone down to the end of the carriageway, gone across the roundabout and actually blocked off the road so no more cars could actually enter the dual carriageway before the emergency services got there," driver Chris Buckingham told Sky News. "Whoever that guy is I'd like to shake his hand because he's probably saved lives," he added.
Authorities have said that it was too early to identify the exact cause behind the multi-vehicle crash but they conceded that the weather probably played a major role. "It was very hazardous," said chief inspector Andy Reeves to BBC News. "It was described to me as a very thick fog at it was certainly low visibility at the time."
