A miscarriage is a very devastating situation for both parents of the lost child, especially for the mother. There are feelings of guilt, fea,; anger and depression that may occur in both parents and oftentimes they want to know why they have miscarriages.
WebMD describes miscarriage as the loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy. There are about 50% of all pregnancies that end in miscarriage, according to March of Dimes.
"When you think about a pregnancy and you think about the beginnings of a human being forming and all the things that have to go perfectly, it really and truly is a miracle when it happens," Dr. Elizabeth Nowachi, an OBY/GYN at St. Vincent Fishers Hospital in Indiana. "You have two sets of genetic material coming together that have to divide, and sometimes things go wrong."
Parenting states the following common causes of miscarriage:
1. Chromosomal abnormality
A chromosomal abnormality is the most common cause of miscarriage. It is a problem in the egg or the sperm's chromosomes in the embryo formation. The chromosomal disorders are not compatible with life and the development just stops.
2. Untreated illnesses such as diabetes and thyroid problems
Dr. Scher said that uncontrolled thyroid and diabetes are related with unfavorable "uterine development" that can make it arduous for the embryo to live.
3. Uterine Abnormalities
A uterus that is abnormally shaped or divided which is called uterine septum that causes miscarriage. On the other hand, this can be corrected with surgery.
4. Bacterial Infection
There are bacteria such as urea plasma urealyticum and mycoplasma hominids that may live in the genital tracts of men and women. These bacteria may alleviate the risk of miscarriage. Its treatment includes taking of antibiotics prescribed by doctors.
5. Lifestyle
Some lifestyle of expectant mothers can harm the unborn child. These include drinking alcohol, taking drugs, smoking and exposure to environmental toxins. Health experts advise that the expectant mothers to give up all these habits before being pregnant.
