Hair Regrowth May Be Possible with Newest Technique Available

Scientists have found a new treatment for baldness for both men and women, according to CBS News.

This newest technique made available can possibly be one of the better ways to transplant hair. This is done through the relocation of hair follicles from one part of the body to the other - typically from the back of the scalp to the front.

The study which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences claimed that the scientists involved in creating this new technique are most concerned with the fact that there are some people who don't necessarily have enough hair follicles. Women in particular don't have enough donor hairs.

Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City and Durham University in the United Kingdom tested the cells found at the base of the hair that makes the hair follicles instead of testing the hair follicles itself. They were able to come up with a very smart way of multiplying hair outside of the body which was then transplanted onto human skin that is grafted on the back of mice. After four to six weeks, the researchers saw noticeable hair growth on the back of the mice involved in the research.

Angela Christiano, senior author of the study and a hair geneticist and dermatology professor at Columbia University confirmed that this new transplant technique may be deemed more effective compared to other types of treatments which normally includes drugs and the like. However, she expressed that this type of treatment, although possibly effective for women will still be more effective for men. As of late, there has not yet been any schedule for a possible clinical trial to prove the effectiveness of this new technique which may be three to five years away.
