"Honey Boo Boo" star Mama June Shannon is turning to plastic surgery to further lose weight. The reality TV star, who already lost 90 pounds through diet, is getting a gastric sleeveprocedure because her diet attempts are putting her life at risk.
Mama June was recently hospitalized after several instances where she collapsed at home. Doctors pinpoint that this was due to her rigid diet, but she still wants to drop to 80 more pounds, so her doctors suggested another route to her weight loss efforts.
TMZ reports that Mama June is expected to get gastric sleeve surgery later in the month from Beverly Hills surgeon Dr. Michael Feiz. The procedure will involve removing some 75 to 85 percent of the stomach, while the rest of it will then be shaped as a "sleeve," per Page Six.
This type of weight loss surgery is recommended for someone who is at least 100 pounds overweight or morbidly obese, like in Mama June's case. "It's not for people who need to lose 20 or 30 pounds," said NYU Langone Medical Center's Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding via New York Daily News.
The risks to the this surgery is about ten percent and the operation time is shorter, thus even patients considered as "high risk" could be considered for gastric sleeve operation, per Obesity Action. Expected complications after surgery may include leaking or abscess, but then this can be prevented with proper care and monitoring. The result of the surgery will have Mama June eating fewer amounts of food at a time since the stomach size has been reduced. She would also have fewer cravings and develop decreased appetite.
She Knows reports that Mama June already underwent another non-invasive plastic surgery procedure called CoolScuplting to remove her "turkey neck," which appeared as a result of her weight loss efforts. The procedure requires freezing fats cells so that it eventually wears off and "dies." Doctors are constantly keeping watch over her health, especially after her collapse.
