"The Divergent Series: Ascendant," the fourth and final film in the franchise, is expected to undergo several changes. While changes are pretty much expected in translating a book series into the big screens, many fans remain hopeful that the ending to the movie will be different from that of the books.
Those who have read Veronica Roth's trilogy are aware that Tris does not make it out alive in the end. Several fans have already begun an online petition in hopes that the final "Divergent" movie will have a different ending, Bustle reported.
The publication notes that the petition is entitled, "Let Tris Live in the Last 'Divergent' Movie." Veronica Roth, however, previously reacted to the online petition and said that Tris' death in the books was necessary for the story.
"This is a very intense transformation that she undergoes... She earned a more powerful ending to the story that that," Roth said in an earlier interview.
"The Divergent Series: Ascendant" also had a tagline, which reads: "The End Is Never What You Expect." This may be taken as a hint that Shailene Woodley's Tris will survive and live a happily ever after with Theo James' Four.
The possible changes in "Ascendant" may also serve as a means to draw the attention of fans and viewers after "Allegiant" struggled in the box office.
According to Variety, "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" only earned $29 million during its opening weekend at the U.S. box office. The publication notes that this was 40 percent lower than its predecessors, "Divergent" and "Insurgent."
Despite the performance of "Allegiant" in the box office, "Ascendant" will still have a summer release competing with other films such as "World War Z 2" and "The Mummy" reboot.
