Jake Gyllenhaal News & Update: 'Demolition' Star Could Have Been Frodo In 'Lord Of The Rings’

"Demolition" star Jake Gyllenhaal has had a fantastic run with such films as "Everest," "Love And Other Drugs" and "Source Code." According to Jake Gyllenhaal, however, this was not always the case as his "Lord Of The Rings" audition with director Peter Jackson would attest.

According to New York Daily News, Jake Gyllenhaal tried out for the role of Frodo Baggins because he received feedback from several agents that he would be perfect for the titular role in "Lord Of The Rings." Jake Gyllenhaal recalled that as many as 14 agents gave him the thumbs up for "Lord Of The Rings."

The Daily Mail reports that Jake Gyllenhaal tanked in the audition mainly because he neither knew nor understood "Lord Of The Rings." Jake Gyllenhaal also got little to no help from the fact that the first part of his "Lord Of The Rings" required no lines. Jake Gyllenhaal was simply given stage directions for the scene in "Lord Of The Rings" where Frodo Baggins discovers the hiding place of "The One Ring."

Because Jake Gyllenhaal had no idea of the gravity of that scene in "Lord Of The Rings," the "Proof" actor casually walked up to the ring and opened it. Jake Gyllenhaal then asked Peter Jackson if he did alright. Peter Jackson, however, was holding his head in despair at that point.

The second section of the audition required Jake Gyllenhaal to read lines from the script. He was taken by surprise that the lines actually required a British accent, and so Jake Gyllenhaal read through his "Lord Of The Rings" lines using a normal American accent.

Peter Jackson then told Jake Gyllenhaal that he has not seen an actor worse than the "Lord Of The Rings" hopeful. Peter Jackson also advised Jake Gyllenhaal to get himself new agents.
