In vitro fertilization (IVF) has been pushing back the pregnancy deadline for moms and moms-to-be aged 50 and up. For these women, similar to Janet Jackson, announcing a pregnancy or parenthood plan at 49 years of age or later is becoming the new norm.
IVF Makes Pregnancy Possible After 50
According to New York Daily News, the medical director of New Hope Fertility Center in Columbus Circle, Dr John Zhang, stated that a woman may conceive and bring to term a live baby for the first time at 50. While Dr Zhang qualified that it is not a frequent occurrence, such a pregnancy without the aid of IVF is not impossible.
For women aged 45 and above, experts slate the probability of natural pregnancy at 4%. From the age of 50, pregnancy without IVF assistance is slated at 1%.
A Viable Route For Pregnancy
Women are reportedly now taking the IVF solution as the more viable route to pregnancy and parenthood. Barring complications or other issues and with a suitable young egg for an IVF procedure, women are now more able to overcome the limitations that age poses.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 677 births in 2013 were from women aged 50 and above. Most, but not all, of these births were assisted by IVF.
The Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv conducted a study in 2009, which verified that a woman may use her own eggs for IVF treatment until the age of 43. After this age, a woman will have to use the eggs of a younger donor for the UVF process.
Janet Jackson Pregnant At 49
Fans are now waiting from Janet Jackson for confirmation on the family plan she announced. According to People, Janet Jackson caused an uproar among fans who hoped to see her in the "Unbreakable" world tour. Janet Jackson announced that she was ordered by doctors to rest in line with her and husband Wissam Al Mana's plans to have a family.
Given her age, most speculations place Janet Jackson to be undergoing, or having undergone, IVF treatment using eggs from a younger donor. Janet Jackson should be in good company as the IVF process has become more refined in recent years.
"Forty percent of mothers are now over 30," Dr Frieda Birnbaum said. "Do you believe that? And there's a decrease by about 4% for younger mothers giving birth under 30."
Dr Birnbaum credits IVF for this new trend. Frieda Birnbaum is the oldest American to give birth to twins at the age of 60. She is now 69. Women who are looking to become mothers at as late an age or otherwise can read about Dr Frieda Birnbaum's experience and journey as a mother of twins in her book "Life Begins at 60."
