'Wolverine 3' Plot, Release Date, Cast News & Update: Film Tackles Future Timeline; Boyd Holbrook Is New Villain

"Wolverine 3" is reportedly going to take place in the future and it will be based on a series spun from Logan's story in the Marvel comics. The film will also introduce a new villain who has never been heard of before. The role has been given to Boyd Holbrook.

Cinema Blend talked with "Wolverine" producer a Simon Kinberg and confirmed that the movie will be following a timeline from the future. This has essentially substantiated earlier reports that the third movie will be based on the "Old Man Logan" story, which was released for eight issues in 2008. "Wolverine" star Hugh Jackman was said to have been spotted with the copy of the comics.

What Is "Old Man Logan" About?

"It's not that long after 'X-Men 3' finishes, long enough so that you see him-and you've probably seen the pictures of me with a really long ass beard and the long hair," Jackman said of his character in 2013, per Screen Rant. He added that, at this point, Logan is weary about "inflicting pain and damage" on everyone and is reassessing his life.

"Wolverine 3" will be the last one for Jackman as Marvel hints it will be exploring a younger version of the "X-Men" character in succeeding installments. The actor played the part for nearly 20 years. The older version of Logan/Wolverine from the future should be a fitting closure to the franchise.

Meet "Wolverine 3" New Villain Boyd Holbrook

Meanwhile, Boyd Holbrook was announced as the recent cast addition to "Wolverine 3," but specific details about the character he's playing remain hush-hush. Variety reports that he's set to play a security chief hunting after Wolverine. Deadline describes Holbrook's character as "relentless, calculating and intense." His casting has been revealed just a month after the movie starts filming.

David James Kelly wrote "Wolverine 3" with James Mangold as the director. Marvel has set the theater date for the movie for March 2017.
