Do you know the science behind a broken heart? Feeling bad after a breakup isn't only an emotional thing. It is a complex set of scientific explanations that has something to do with neural processes. Now, that's quite mind blowing, isn't it?
According to Huffington Post, you feel bad and blue all over after a breakup because your brain is the one that reminds you of that lost love. This is regardless of whether you are the one getting dumped or are the one who broke off with your significant other.
Dr. Lucy Brown, a neuroscientist, said that in 2010, she and her team conducted an experiment where they looked into the brain activity of those who have just broken up. An MRI machine was used to monitor the brain activities of the participants. They were shown photos of an "ex" and another photo of a "friend."
Love is A Drug
The results of the study were amazing. Indeed, the science behind a broken heart will surprise you. When participants looked at the picture of an ex, brain regions associated with cocaine withdrawal were activated. Because of the findings, Brown made the conclusion that love is akin to that of a drug.
Like cocaine, love is like a drug that people find hard to quit or let go. So if you were in love with a person and he or she broke up with you, a part of your brain will still be activated whenever you see him or her. Aside from feeling pain, one cannot deny that the said brain activity simply means that love is alive.
Healing A Broken Heart
Now that you have found the science behind a broken heart, don't despair. There are still things you can do to heal your heart break. Life Hack mentioned that you just have to deal with the pain. Try not to run away from it or else you may find yourself running forever.
Also, try to shake off the guilt and never be too hard on yourself. Focus on tasks that could make you better. There's no other better thing than finding yourself and making yourself even better than you already are, especially after a break up. Re-prioritize your life and find that balance within yourself to find inner peace - the best way to mend a broken heart.
Understanding the science behind a broken heart will help you look at things at a better perspective. Although the "love" will always be alive, there is still something you can do about it.
