CBS has kept details of the "Star Trek" TV reboot hush-hush, but a new insider report claims that the network might be planning to follow the original storyline. Its plot is said to be closer to "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and the network plans to release the show as an anthology.
Birth Movies Death reveals that the new "Star Trek" for television will not be based on the 2009 J.J. Abrams franchise. Instead, it will press on with the classic timeline that was explored in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," which aired on TV from 1987 to 1994, and "Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country," which was a stand-alone film released in 1991.
The insider additionally stated that the reboot will be a "seasonal anthology." The implication is that producers will have more ways to expand the "Star Trek" universe in its re-telling. The network tasked Bryan Fuller as the reboot's showrunner, who has revealed in past interviews that his production will not overlap with the current movie franchise's stories, per Digital Spy.
The Mary Sue cites that Trekkers cannot expect any appearances from beloved "Star Trek" characters like Captain Kirk or the crew from the Enterprise since the rumored timeline suggests they are either dead or in the Nexus. However, this plan fits into CBS' earlier statements about the production's intention to introduce new characters and new worlds. Fans are already looking forward to the potential casting of high profile and talented actors for the reboot.
CBS announced the return of "Star Trek" in November in its effort to improve its All Access streaming service. The show will be exclusive to the paid online service, where subscription is at $6 a month. The service is similar to Netflix.
"Star Trek" on CBS All Access is scheduled for release in January 2017. However, the first episode will be aired on television.
