Canelo Alvarez V Gennady Golovkin News & Updates: Is The Mexican Boxing Star Ready For Superstardom?

Muhammad Ali became a household name when he defeated the fearsome Sonny Liston, while Manny Pacquiao became an international icon when he demolished the much bigger Oscar Dela Hoya. Canelo Alvarez is already a boxing star, but is he ready to achieve a worldwide status once he wins the alleged Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin fight?

Canelo Alvarez has already beaten quality fighters such as Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan and Shane Mosley, but he has not won against an opponent that will bring him to new levels of popularity. His chance to do so was unsuccessful when he was thoroughly dominated by the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Fortunately, the 25-year-old Mexican star has another chance to become a household name all over the world if he agrees to a Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin super fight. But is Canelo Alvarez willing to fight the intimidating knockout artist?

"Like we say in Mexico, 'We don't (expletive) around,' " Canelo Alvarez said via Boxing Junkie. "I don't fear anyone. Right now I will put on the gloves again and fight (Golovkin)."

If Canelo Alvarez ducks Gennady Golovkin and becomes content with fighting other less formidable opponents, the Mexican will remain a star in boxing circles -- but not on the same level as Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali. Those fighters became legendary because they fought the best possible opponents in their division.

Alvarez' promoter Oscar De La Hoya seems to indicate that Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin is a sure thing. "Golovkin, make sure you answer your phone in the morning," De La Hoya said via Bleacher Report. "We will call you."
