Disney might finally produce a live-action remake of "Little Mermaid," based off its 1989 animated film. Talks have reportedly rolled with studio heads and those who were part of the earlier production. However, details on its development are still scarce.
Deadline reports that Disney is hatching the remake with a new take in mind. The power-that-be apparently heard the new idea and are now evaluating if it's feasible. The news comes as Disney just released a teaser of its live-action take on "Beauty and the Beast" starring Emma Watson. It's one of Disney's beloved animated classics, along with "Little Mermaid."
Zap2It reports that Disney's move is not surprising since the studio's other live-action remakes of the cartoons, such as "Maleficent," "Cinderella" and "Jungle Book," have been raking high box office numbers. The studio could also potentially make its competition with Universal interesting since the latter is already set to produce a "Little Mermaid" remake starring Chloe Moretz. However, Universal's plan for the story is believed to be a modern-day take.
There's also another "Little Mermaid" remake in the works, but this will be produced by MVP Studios, per Parent Herald. This production will feature William Moseley in the starring role, but it will be based from the original Hans Christian Anderson tale published in 1837.
The animated version of "Litte Mermaid" centers on Ariel, a mermaid who longs to become a human being. She gives up her voice to the sea witch, Ursula, in exchange for a pair of legs. But she had to deal with the consequences of her decisions.
The cartoons made songs like "Part of Your World," "Kiss the Girl" and "Under the Sea" popular among the mainstream audience. The story also spawned a stage production, including in Broadway, and it remains popular to this day.
