"Iron Man 4" may not be happening anytime soon. Even though Robert Downey Jr. is willing to reprise his role as the badass billionaire superhero Tony Stark in the highly anticipated sequel, the 51-year-old "The Avengers" star recently hinted to concentrate on his other projects.
Marvel Studios has yet to announce the current status or the possibility for "Iron Man 4." But actor Robert Downey Jr. has already admitted his willingness to do another installment in several interviews, even hinting the possibility of Mel Gibson helming the film.
'Iron Man 4' Still Uncertain
In spite of the calls to make "Iron Man 4" and Downey Jr.'s willingness, the plans for the sequel still look grim. As a matter of fact, there seems to be a lot of contrasting statements about the film, of course, courtesy of none other than Robert Downey Jr. himself, The Christian Times notes.
During his interview with ABC's "Nightline," Downey Jr. said he's willing to do a sequel but no further explanations were revealed. In an October 2014 interview, the "Sherlock Holmes" actor also gave an ambiguous statement about the much-anticipated film.
"It all has become this thing that has to be figured out," he told Deadline. "It has come to a head, right now, where the points of departure will be."
Robert Downey Jr. Has Other Plans And It's Not 'Iron Man 4'
For "Iron Man 4" to get off the ground, Robert Downey Jr. said he wanted his pal, Mel Gibson to direct the sequel, Inquisitr hints. But in a Reddit AMA, Downey Jr. retracted his statement when he mentioned hiring Gibson for "Iron Man 4," saying he has other projects with the "Braveheart" star.
"It was an offhanded remark to a journalist and friend," Downey Jr. explained. "I have other projects in mind for Mel and I - sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered."
No Regrets For Mandarin Twist In 'Iron Man 3'
Meanwhile, "Iron Man 3" director Shane Black recently admitted that he had no regrets about his choice in making classic Marvel villain the Mandarin nothing like the one depicted in the comic book. His admission came after some Marvel fans expressed their distaste on "Iron Man 3," The Independent reports.
Speaking to IGN, Black said he felt a little bad about fans disliking his take on the classic comic book antagonist. However, Black also stressed he's more than willing to do it again if he's given a chance.
"We made a lot of money with the movie, but there is a hardcore niche of fandom that was genuinely disappointed; they wanted to see their version," Black said in an interview. "And for that I feel bad. I still like the choice we made."
As for "Iron Man 4," the sequel's potential development seems to be at odds with Marvel plans. In fact, the MCU timeline is reportedly filled until 2019 and it's not quite sure if "Iron Man 4" could still fill in.
