Often times, parents, especially new ones are eager to let their kids try out new things and fill in their photo albums and journals. Parents are too focused on giving their children activities just so they will keep their children busy and stray away from boredom. According to studies however, parents should make it a point to let their children experience boredom.
In a letter, written by Radhika Swarup for Huffpost, it was mentioned that parents should give their children the privilege to get bored. In a world captivated by technology and daily activities, children should be taught to slow down.
It was mentioned that children should experience boredom for them to enhance their creativity and explore the world around them. If children wouldn't be given a planned routine even for just a day in a week, they would be able to come up with something that triggers their cognitive and analytical skills.
Boredom is often perceived as something negative, but experts suggest that children can reap something by experiencing it. BCC then added that by letting young children experience boredom, they would be able to develop their inner creativity.
Dr. Teresa Belton, an education expert, pointed out the importance of boredom among children. Belton pointed out that letting children engage in planned systematic activities prohibits them from learning on their own.
Belton cited the famous author Meera Syal as an example of the effects of boredom. It was mentioned that as a child, Meera Syal doesn't have much, thus she tends to come up with something new to keep herself entertained every time she's bored.
"But importantly boredom made her write," Belton told BCC. "She kept a diary from a young age, filling it with observations, short stories, poems, and diatribe. And she attributes these early beginnings to becoming a writer late in life"
