'Castle' Season 9 News & Update: Which Cast Member Feels For Stana Katic, Believes Nathan Fillion 'Could Do Show Alone'?

Since the cancellation of "Castle" in May, news of a potential spinoff or the continuation of the show for Season 9 has been widespread on the internet. But ABC has been firm in its decision not to push through with it, and now a former cast member on the show is speaking up about the way "Castle" ended.

Susan Sullivan, who played Richard Castle's mother, Martha Rodgers, revealed that while she expected "Castle" could go for eight seasons, she didn't expect how it was ultimately canceled off. She sympathizes with Stana Katic, who played Det. Kate Beckett and Castle's wife, as it was announced she would be cut from the show due to "budgetary reasons" in April. Sullivan notes that the same thing happened to her while she was doing "Falcon Crest" back in the 80s. She cited that the network also wanted to cut her budget and "put it into another character," but the idea failed, she told TV Fanatic in an exclusive interview.

'Castle' Season 9: Nathan Fillion Can Carry The Show

Sullivan also cites that she believes Nathan Fillion as Castle can carry the show on his own, if ABC pushed through with "Castle" for another year. "I think he's so good he certainly could do a show alone," Sullivan said. However, she also acknowledges that it won't be what "Castle" fans would like.

'Castle' Season 9: Fans Want CasKett Intact

Indeed, fans of "Castle" have been passionate about keeping the original characters of the show together, especially after news surfaced that ABC would be killing off Kate so that the show can move on. Fans launched a Facebook page dedicated to letting the network know they would rather have "Castle" canceled than moving forward without Stana Katic.

Fans also launched a petition to cancel the show if ABC won't keep Beckett. "Stana plays "Beckett" she's the "kett" in "Caskett" which is the essence of "Castle," the petition via Change.Org stated.

Meanwhile, ABC's new president, Channing Dungey, confirmed that the series has officially ended as the network revealed its fresh slate of shows to advertisers during the upfronts last May, per Deadline. "Castle" Season 9 or a "Castle" spinoff was not in its lineup.
