Modern Fathers: How Do They Really Look Like Now?

A modern father has a description that is a far cry from the traditional father society is accustomed to. In this generation of millennials, fathers and mothers are also working outside the home. Because of this set up, it is not surprising for a father to share the workload around the house as well. This includes taking care of the kids, doing grocery shopping and even cooking meals.

Our parents grew up in the baby boomer generation. An era where men are the bread winners of the family and women are to stay at home taking care of the children. However, things have changed quite a lot and according to an article written in Parenting.com, it is a welcoming scene to have a father be involved with the kids and other household chores.

While this is a good thing to note, statistics coming from The Report said the following about the new roles of father in the home: that the country is not doing enough to have this kind of set up at home. While some few fathers do exhibit the things mentioned above, there are families who are living in a single parent home. Others, who have an intact family have fathers who couldn't even afford to take a leave for any important event in their child's life because of the economic conditions.

According to statistics, 11 percent of men will go to prison and that leaves 2.7 million kids whose fathers are incarcerated. This is sad since fathers do play a pivotal role in a child's life yet, to some children it doesn't always happen. This kind of parental situation needs to be better.

In order to help, what the government needs to do is to provide a national legislation where both parents could be allowed to take a paid leave. Workplaces should also value the things that parents do for their families as much as they value what parent workers can contribute to their company.

According to the president and CEO of Promundo, Gary Barker, he expresses the research findings saying: "What our report and our new data show is this: women and men want the policies and the support so that all parents can be full-on, fully engaged, fully equal caregivers. We also confirm that implementing paid leave is far less costly than often thought; and that when implemented alongside income support to low-income fathers and parents, these policies pay for themselves in increased productivity and happier, healthier families. What are we waiting for?"
