It's been months since Anne Hathaway and Garry Marshall announced that they are considering doing "Princess Diaries 3" and fans of the movie franchise might be wondering how the development is going since. So far, most of the stars of the film have expressed their willingness to reprise their roles, but Disney has yet to make things official.
Recently, Garry Marshall, who directed the previous "Princess Diaries" movies, told Radio Times that he believes Anne Hathaway and Disney are already "talking" about "Princess Diaries 3." The director and the stars cannot move forward with the movie unless Disney gives it a go. "Disney owns everything," he said.
Apart from Hathaway and Marshall, Julie Andrews has also been in talks with the lead actress and director. Meanwhile, Chris Pine, Hector Elizondo and Heather Matarazzo also expressed their interest in making "Princess Diaries 3" happen, per Parent Herald. The former cast members are awaiting any good word from the studio, just like the fans.
The director also revealed that the idea to do "Princess Diaries 3" was hatched due to Anne Hathaway's pregnancy and her desire to do a movie that her child can watch. The actress gave birth to her son on March 24, per another Parent Herald report.
"Princess Diaries," which hit theaters in 2001 and then again in 2004, gave rise to Anne Hathaway's star power and appeal. Teenage girls loved the wholesome and positive vibe of the film, much akin to a Cinderella story. Based off a book series written by Meg Cabot, "Princess Diaries" has become a young adult cult favorite.
Meanwhile, even as Anne Hathaway has yet to convince Disney about "Princess Diaries 3," she's already doing a royal duty -- so to speak -- in real life. The actress has been recently named as the newest Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations, per its press release. Her advocacy includes adoption, childcare services and parental leave. Anne Hathaway helped in raising awareness regarding child marriage in Kenya and Ethiopia in 2013. She has visited these countries while doing a documentary for CNN.
