People often hear and read the old adage, "Money can't buy happiness," which reminds us that wealth isn't everything. But this statement has spawned so many opposing views. In fact, some would say that money can indeed buy happiness by providing the basic needs of human - food, shelter and clothing. But for some, money is just a means to an end.
So, can money really buy happiness? In a Facebook video post published on Jun. 10, Upworthy collaborated with TD Ameritrade to ask some people (young and old) to answer the question - "What makes you happy?" They were also asked if what money means to them.
What Does Money Mean To You?
In the Facebook video, which has been viewed more than 869,000 times and shared over 1,600 times, a child said that for her, money is "just a piece of paper" that can't give you hugs. Another also answered that people need money but not a lot while one said money can't buy happiness.
Some also stressed that people who have lots of money can be miserable and anxious. But there were also some who contradicted others' statements, saying money can buy happiness.
What Make People Really Happy?
Aside from sharing their own thoughts about money, the group was also asked what makes them happy. Based on their responses, it's safe to say that happiness for them means being with their family and loved ones.
Meanwhile, the video also provoked social media commenters to share really interesting comments. However, they also showed opposing thoughts with some saying money can't be an assurance for happiness but it can buy "comfort and some peace of mind."
