Cersei Lannister has ascended to the Iron Throne in the Season 6 finale of "Game of Thrones." It didn't come without a price, though. In the process, Cersei lost her remaining son Tommen when he committed suicide after witnessing what his mother did to her enemies at the Great Sept of Baelor.
How will this play out in Season 7? In an interview with Deadline, "Game of Thrones" series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said the seventh season will showcase a different Cersei now that she has no children tethering her to humanity.
According to Weiss, Cersei is this person who does horrible and cruel things, but her genuine love for her three children -- Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), Myrcella (Nell Tiger Free) and Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) -- serves as her redeeming quality. Now that she has nothing to lose, a more vicious and volatile Cersei should be expected.
Cersei As Mad Queen
Cersei has shown some Mad Queen tendencies in the Season 6 finale. She used leftover wildfire from the reign of Mad King Aerys Targaryen, who enjoyed burning people alive using the concoction. Cersei then brutally tortured Septa Unella (Hannah Waddingham), who had beaten and humiliated her when she was still a captive of the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce).
Benioff and Weiss pointed out that Tommen's suicide can partly be blamed on Cersei. If she hadn't sent Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) to attack Septa Unella, he would have been watching after Tommen and prevented his suicide.
Even Headey is sure Cersei won't be a great ruler. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress said there's "not a chance in hell" that Cersei would rule for long, and it's only a matter of time before she gets killed. And we shouldn't forget the witch Maggy the Frog's prophecy.
Cersei Will Likely Die
In Season 5, Maggy the Frog prophesized young Cersei's future and predicted that she would wed the king, be replaced by a younger and prettier queen, have three children who would be crowned but die, and be strangled by her little brother. The first three prophecies have all come true, so the final prediction wouldn't be far off now.
Headey said in her interview that Cersei will be killed by the "right person," and it's either Arya (Maisie Williams) or Tyrion (Peter Dinklage). As we know, Arya has Cersei at the top of her infamous kill list, and Tyrion has been at odds with his older sister since they were children.
But there are other theories about Maggy the Frog's "little brother" prophecy. Some fans think Cersei's younger twin/lover Jaime will kill her and not Tyrion. Jaime carries the Kingslayer label with him and he thinks he did it for the greater good. Would he have the same belief once more with "mad" Queen Cersei?
