"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 served as the series finale, which ultimately showed the death of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green). In an interview with TVLine, series creator John Logan explained that the show had to end with Vanessa's death because the series was all about her.
"To me, the show was always going to achieve closure with the death of Vanessa," explained Logan. "And all the storylines this season were meant to be leaving characters at a place of appropriate and beautiful stasis."
Showtime president David Nevins also said that he knew "Penny Dreadful" was a series that was not going to run for six or seven seasons on air. He also considered continuing the story even without Logan in it, but he realized that the show would not be as great without the person who created the story.
Despite the explanation behind the "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 cancellation, many fans believed that there was another reason for ending the show. Several fans expressed their dismay towards the abrupt ending for the series and started petitioning for Netflix to pick up the series for more seasons.
While "Penny Dreadful" Season 4 is highly unlikely to happen on Showtime or other networks, Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter that a spinoff is not out of the equation. Nevins explained that the network will be working with Logan on other shows and time will reveal if they will work on the spinoff later on.
"[As for spinoffs], anything is possible at any time," he said.
