Katy Perry may have stolen some of Britney Spears' thunder after she also released a new single Thursday evening just minutes after the Las Vegas headliner on iTunes and Apple Music. Titled "Rise," the electropop song will serve as the anthem for NBC's coverage of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Katy Perry surprised fans when she initially posted about the single release on Instagram. "TOGETHER WE #RISE (on #Applemusic now)," she captioned the photo.
Katy Perry's voice is slightly distorted at the first part of the uplifting track before she belts in the chorus. "When the fire's at my feet again, and the vultures all start circling/ They're whispering, 'You're out of time,' but still I rise," Perry sings.
Katy Perry has said that she already had the idea for the song years ago but she only had the time to finally record it recently, Entertainment Weekly reported. "This is a song that's been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface," she said. "I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite."
Before "Rise" Katy Perry's last single was "This Is How We Do" from the third mainstream album "Prism." She, however, also released the Christmas song "Every Day is a Holiday" back in November in time for the holidays.
In other news, Katy Perry has been entangled in the current Calvin Harris-Taylor Swift drama after the Scottish DJ mentioned her name in passing in one of his tweets, Time reported He seems to be alluding to the widely-speculated rift between Perry and Swift that was allegedly the inspiration behind Swift's No. 1 single "Bad Blood."
"I know you're off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I'm not that guy, sorry. I won't allow it," the 32-year old DJ's tweet about Katy Perry read.
