The LGBT community is being openly recognized not only in the workplace but also through the educational system. One of the latest debates among the LGBT recognition is to whether have LGBT education added to a school curriculum. As of the latest update, California will be one of the few schools that will be making an inclusion of the LGBT education in their classrooms.
On July 14, California's State Board of Education made a unanimous decision to approve inclusion of adding the prominent LGBT personalities in the school's curriculum, especially in the school's history classes. CBS reports that the public school's LGBT history lessons should be part of the history and social science curriculum. It came into approval after the prevalent lack of recognition of prominent LGBT individuals. As they've decided to vote for the inclusion, no one opposed for the LGBT rights to be added to the school curriculum.
The LGBT topic is expected to appear in K8 books under the K-12 curriculum. It was submitted five years ago as it took the legislators a while to see its essence. It was then highlighted that a party of the law "prohibits" the classroom materials which directly aim at the LGBT community and specific religion, which can be offensive.
Matthew McReynolds, a Pacific Justice Institute senior staff noted that the inclusion of the LGBT personalities in the lessons in school may put the emphasis on historical figures and events.
"Certainly, some families will be concerned about their second-graders learning about two-mom families, McReynolds pointed out. "But I think parents would be much more alarmed if they knew that LGBT History Month, in the last few years, has promoted the notion that 'America the Beautiful' is a source of lesbian pride."
Education Week then added some insight as to why the LGBT community, events, and personalities are often neglected on the school's curriculum. As parents, do you think the LGBT curriculum should be implemented in all schools? Do let us know through the comment section below.
