Marvel and Netflix unleased the first teaser to "The Defenders" at the Comic Con Thursday. The show, about a group of unlikely heroes from Hell's Kitchen, won't be coming to the streaming site until 2017, but it is already much anticipated by viewers.
However, some might wonder and compare this band of crime fighters to another Marvel hero group, "The Avengers." However, a Marvel boss clarifies that there's a big difference between the two.
'The Defenders' Fight In A 'Grounded World'
Marvel's TV Head, Jeph Loeb, spoke with Cinema Blend to discuss "The Avengers" vs. "The Defenders" and stated that the latter are "street level heroes" who protect the neighborhood. Though armed with special and incredible abilities, "The Defenders" are not out to fight aliens or mythical enemies on a much larger scale like "The Avengers."
"What we're trying to do is tell stories about men and women who are here to save, in some cases, the neighborhood, and in some cases themselves," said Loeb. "The Defenders" have a different view of their own little world and the show itself isn't about defining good vs. evil, unlike in "The Avengers" movies. "The Defenders" are not perfect beings as well as they have personal issues and conflicts to hurdle through.
'The Defenders' Trailer: Who Are The Defenders?
"The Defenders" feature four ordinary people with extra-ordinary abilities who have teamed up in Hell's Kitchen in New York. Each one has a separate show on Netflix: "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist." For someone who isn't in deep in Marvel comics, it might not be easy to decipher the first-ever teaser to "The Defenders," but here's a simple breakdown below.
The trailer features Nirvana's "Come As You Are" in the background as newspaper strips peel off on the wall to reveal images. The images carefully introduce each of the four heroes.
"Daredevil." First to be flashed on the teaser is the "Daredevil" logo, which represents Netflix's first superhero series released in 2015 starring Charlie Cox. Marvel confirms that "Daredevil" has been renewed for a third season on Netflix, per Comic Book.
"Jessica Jones." Next, the image of Alias Investigation appears in "The Defenders" teaser and this is the detective agency that Jessica has set up at the end of "Jessica Jones" Season 1 starring Krysten Ritter. The show is in the midst of filming its second season and has no release date yet.
"Luke Cage." The third image flashed in "The Defenders" teaser is Seagate Prison. It is where the character of Luke Cage was incarcerated before his return to Hell's Kitchen. His origin story will be unveiled for the first time on Friday, September 30, when all of its episodes will be out on Netflix, per Den of Geek.
"Iron Fist." The fourth image from "The Defenders" teaser asks - who is Danny Rand? The question will be answered when "Iron Fist" debuts sometime in 2017, also on Netflix, and perhaps before "The Defenders" is actually out.
"The Defenders" teaser also hints of The Hand, which represents the crime organization that Daredevil has been trying to bust in his show. The Hand has been wreaking havoc on Hell's Kitchen for a long, long time. Watch the full teaser to "The Defenders" below.
