"Orange Is The New Black" cast member Samira Wiley has now joined a new series, after she signed on for a major role in the upcoming series "The Handmaid's Tale." Adapted from the dystopian novel of the same name written by Margaret Atwood, the new series will focus on Elizabeth Moss's character Offred who will traverse a fictional patriarchal society called Gilead which is dealing with a considerable population decline.
Wiley, who portrayed Poussey as part of the "Orange Is The New Black" cast, will play Moira, Offed's friend, Variety reported. The show will begin its Toronto shootings this fall, with its streaming premiere expected in 2017. It will serve as Wiley's first role after her character was killed off in the fourth season of "Orange Is The New Black." Poussey died due to accidental suffocation after a scuffle between Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) and CO Bayley (Alan Aisenberg), a reflection of the current state of the #BlackLivesMatter movement in the United States.
What makes this news interesting is that Wiley's new role that will be shown in Hulu, a major rival of Netflix. Does this mean that Netflix and the "Orange Is The New Black" cast feels betrayed by her transfer? Not if a tweet from Emmy winner and fellow cast member Uzo Aduba is any indication. "Go, Samira, GO!!" the actress wrote before tagging Wiley.
In other "Orange Is The New Black" cast news, Laverne Cox, who plays Sophia Burset in the Netflix show, dazzled in the first trailer of Fox's two-hour TV movie remake of the cult film "Rocky Horror Picture Show," which will air during the Halloween season, Stereo Gum reported. She will play Dr. Frank-N-Furter and will lead a cast that also includes Victoria Justice, Reeve Carney, Christina Milian and Adam Lambert.
