Cross-play is an exciting gaming feature that would make it possible for gamers to play with each other despite using different consoles or platforms like PS4, Xbox One or PC. "Rocket League" developer, Psyonix, has already established support for the cross-play feature for its game's release on the Xbox One and PC. Many treat this innovation as a boost for the gaming industry.
Psyonix has long been trying to convince Sony to make cross-play available for the PS4. But despite the calls, Sony has yet to give the feature a go. What could be the reason?
PS4-Xbox One Cross-play Can Be Established In One Day
Psyonix executive Jeremy Dunham talked with IGN and revealed that its company has been ready for a PS4 and Xbox One cross-play for some time now. In fact, Dunham is confident this can be set up and activated in "less than a business day" if needed.
The only problem that's preventing a PS4 and Xbox One cross-play is Sony's refusal to enter into the fray. "We're literally at the point where all we need is the go-ahead on the Sony side," Dunham related and added that all Psyonix needs is Sony's permission, and cross-play on "Rocket League" will be turned on across all platforms.
PS4-Xbox One Cross-play: More Developers Calling On Sony
Months ago, Sony released a statement that it was actually open to the idea of a PS4 and Xbox One cross-play. In a statement via Gamespot, the company stated that it has been supporting cross-play since 2002, with the release of Final Fantasy XI for the PS2 and PC. Sony expressed that it would be willing to discuss the prospect further with publishers. This was taken as a good sign of its willingness to enter into cross-play.
According to Kotaku, developers have been openly nudging Sony to fulfill its earlier pronouncements, but it looks like it's been falling on deaf ears. One other company that's also waiting for Sony's approval for cross-play gaming is CD Projekt, which will release "Gwent: The Witcher Card Game" this year. The developer received a greenlight from Microsoft for its Xbox One and PC platforms' cross-play, yet it's still waiting for Sony's approval for the PS4.
However, Dunham reiterates that he understands it's not an easy decision for Sony. "I'm sure it takes a while for them to figure out what it is that the roadblocks are," he told IGN. For now, Psyonix is patiently waiting, just like the gamers who will benefit from this the most.
