Education is perhaps one of the major election issues that every presidential nominee should address. Unfortunately, the 2016 U.S. Presidential campaigns magnified the candidate's lack of interest by not disclosing their concrete K-12 or general education proposals.
It's already a given fact that education seems to be not the focus of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump's campaign. But as the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election looms, both the Republican and the Democratic parties' nominees have announced their respective stance when it comes to education.
Donald Trump only gave a single-sentence remark while Hillary Clinton shared a more extensive outline regarding her education platform. So, who do you think between Trump and Clinton gave the better education proposal?
Donald Trump's Education Platform
"We will rescue kids from failing schools by helping their parents send them to a safe school of their choice," Republican presidential nominee and real estate mogul Donald Trump said at the Republican convention in Cleveland on Jul. 21, as per The Hechinger Report.
Trump's single-sentence, buzzwords-filled education remark has raised some eyebrows because his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, even gave more substantial statements on education. But since Trump's campaign has a penchant for giving short policy details, his remark did not come out as a surprise but many were curious on what standard will Trump use to determine a failing school.
Hillary Clinton's Education Platform
As Donald Trump mentioned education in passing, Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton gave a more comprehensive education platform, with emphasis placed on school reform. She also announced her plans of free college education for low and middle-class families at public universities.
Moreover, Clinton vowed to end the "education wars" and the focus on "failing schools." According to Slate, Clinton also promised to expand access to child care and pre-K.
Clinton has also been labeled as the teachers' candidate after she mentioned on her education platform her plans to pay teachers more, eliminate college debt, construct new school buildings and incorporate computer science courses into the K-12 program. Unfortunately, Clinton's supportive remark on charter schools earned scattered boos from the audience.
Hillary Clinton Vs. Donald Trump
Even though it appeared that Hillary Clinton's education proposal got the upper hand compared to Donald Trump's, The Atlantic said the Democratic side still have gaps to be filled. In fact, Clinton's "debt-free college" plans sparked a debate whether the removal of students' loans will result to more students with degrees.
The publication also highlighted the fact that Clinton's education proposal didn't give any details on K-12 education. Meanwhile, for an update on Clinton and Trump's education views and ideas, check out Education Week.
