The son of actor Michael Douglas, Cameron Douglas, has been released behind bars after almost seven years of spending time behind bars. He was convicted back in 2010 for possession of heroin and selling methamphetamine.
Cameron was supposed to serve only five years behind bars but later after starting his prison sentence, he confessed to smuggling drugs into prison. This then resulted to the two-year extension of his sentence as well as two years in solitary confinement. Cameron was supposed to be released by 2018 but is now spending time in a center that helps former addicts in Brooklyn, New York.
While spending time for his conviction, Cameron wrote an op-ed for the publication The Huffington Post. He shared that he takes full responsibility for hi mistakes but also called for prison reforms for non-violent offenders. He wrote during that time that no one "seems to comprehend that tossing individuals desperate for skills to cope with addiction behind bars, no matter for how long a period of time, does absolutely nothing" but deter these people from giving in to their weaknesses.
Cameron was arrested at a hotel in Manhattan in 2009. He posted bail and violated the terms of his house arrest as he was awaiting sentencing. Eventually, he was held in custody even before he started his prison sentence, E! News reported.
Michael also opened up about Cameron's prison time during his Emmys acceptance speech in 2013. He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries for "Behind the Candelabra." He shared regarding the solitary confinement of his son, "It's been over a year now. And I'm questioning the system. Obviously, at first, I was certainly disappointed in my son. But I've reached a point now where I'm very disappointed with the system."
Cameron is the son of Michael to his ex-wife Diandra Douglas. Michael and Diandra ended their marriage, which lasted for 23 years, back in the year 2000.
