A "Star Trek" TV series has been ordered for reboot development under CBS and it seems the show will be a huge throwback to the diversity of the first series as it was confirmed that the science fiction series' lead will be a female. The new "Star Trek" TV series currently in development will be called "Star Trek: Discovery" and will serve as the seventh show set in the "Star Trek" universe, becoming the first "Star Trek" TV series since 2004.
"Star Trek" TV series executive producer Bryan Fuller, who is gay, was adamant in his decision to include a gay character in the "Star Trek" TV series after receiving a lot of hate mail, Entertainment Weekly reported. "We've come a long way since then. I feel like actually gay rights have come a lot further in that time than race issues and women's issues."
This "Star Trek" TV series news comes a few weeks after the film "Star Trek Beyond" featured a gay version of Sulu (John Cho). This became controversial after the original actor George Takei opposed the move as not conforming to creator Gene Roddenberry's original vision and suggested that the writers make a new character instead. Rumors that Spock will be portrayed as gay have been floated but the show will allegedly not appear in the "Star Trek" TV series so who the gay character will be is still up in the air. Captain Kirk will also reportedly not be portrayed in the "Star Trek" TV series, at least in the first season.
In other "Star Trek" TV series news, according to Japan Today, Fuller has also confirmed that the female lead star will be a human but not a captain. The role has not been filled yet.
The new "Star Trek" TV series will premiere on CBS All Access in early 2017. For more spoilers, news and updates on the upcoming "Star Trek" TV series, we will be posting as we know more.
