In this generation where bullying and gender discrimination is rampant, parents are starting to raise their kids in a way where gender discrimination is out of the context. Parents from all over the world are starting to come up with a way to fight discrimination as they opt to raise gender-neutral children.
Mothers from Australia decided to end gender discrimination as they moved forward in raising gender-neutral children. Thea Hughes told News website that she lets her children explore both genders when it comes to clothing, toys, and even cartoons that they'd prefer. Huges stated that letting children freely explore things on their own ensures them the freedom.
Letting children explore things in a gender neutral perspective does not limit their gender restrictions. Thea Hughes then added that raising gender neutral children are more likely to grow up without being stereotypical and judgmental.
"Our socialization into gender roles limits our children's potential to discover unhindered who they are and what they're interested in," she says. Gender stereotypes are so forcefully pushed on kids in so many different ways - in the use of gender specific language and stereotyping in schools, in the media and in marketing ... and I think it's really important parents consider the detrimental impacts of that."
Parents also featured Lisa Cohn from Portland, Oregon who also raised gender neutral kids. Cohn shared that she preferred to raise gender neutral kids as they shy away from stereotypes.
"We definitely avoid stereotypes about Mom doing the dishes and Dad mowing the lawn. That's not what our kids see at all," Cohn says. "I generally let my youngest son wear pink if he wants to, and he often appears in public wearing a headband. And I'm very careful about how I talk about girls and boys--and don't choose books that stereotype men and women."
