The MTV Video Music Awards 2016 is just around the corner and it is looking like the race for the Moonman for Best Male Video will boil down to two rappers: Kanye West and Drake. The two, which both had viral videos in the past year, will be duking out in the MTV Video Music Awards 2016 category, leaving other nominees Bryson Tiller, Calvin Harris and The Weeknd in the dust.
In previous years, Hollywood's premiere music video awards show has rewarded both industry acclaim and fan support in its categories. That will likely continue in the MTV Video Music Awards 2016. "Hotline Bling" was a bona fide cultural phenomenon, spawning a lot of memes on the Internet. In fact, during the peak of its popularity, a lot of "Hotline Bling"-inspired Vines have gone viral, Perez Hilton reported. "Famous," on the other hand, was controversial and provocative because of the wax bodies featured in the clip. According to the Rolling Stone, Lena Dunham called the video "sickening" and "disturbing."
"This Is What You Came For" and "Can't Feel My Face" may have been big hits but the videos are not exactly MTV Video Music Awards 2016 material. Bryson Tiller's "Don't," meanwhile, is not popular enough to garner the MTV Video Music Awards 2016 Best Male Video trophy.
The most likely winner for this MTV Video Music Awards 2016 category is Drake's "Hotline Bling" due to the major backlash West had received for an explicit lyric in his song "Famous" about Taylor Swift. The lyrics earned the ire of Swift's friends and fans and even spawned an even bigger controversy when West's wife, Kim Kardashian, got involved.
MTV and its affiliate channels will be airing the MTV Video Music Awards 2016 on Sunday, August 28, live from New York City's Madison Square Garden at 8 pm ET.
