Talks continue regarding plans for "Princess Diaries 3" despite the untimely passing of its director, Garry Marshall. The cast is still interested in pursuing the sequel with Disney. Hector Elizondo, one of the supporting actors in the film, even suggested that the third movie should be helmed by a female director. Will "Princess Diaries" star Anne Hathaway be willing to work behind the camera for the film as well?
Hector Elizondo spoke with Variety Latino exclusively regarding "Princess Diaries 3" and expressed that despite losing his best friend Garry Marshall in August, the rest of the cast are still open for making the third movie. But while it's sad to think the potential new film will be without Marshall's participation, the actor thinks it would be best for a woman director to take the reins this time.
"We don't have enough of them," said the veteran actor. "God knows there are female directors out there," he added.
Talks about doing "Princess Diaries 3" surfaced sometime early this year, when Marshall said that he and Anne Hathaway have been toying with the idea. They got Julie Andrews on board as well and started talking about the prospect to Disney, as per Parent Herald.
Before Marshall's passing, he expressed that with most of the cast willing to return for "Princess Diaries 3," it is now up to Disney to decide the fate of the film. Disney has not yet confirmed the movie and "Princess Diaries 3" still remains in limbo with Marshall's death.
The idea to do "Princess Diaries 3" sprung from Anne Hathaway's real life transition to motherhood; that it might also be the right time to update her beloved character, Princess Mia of Genovia. Hector Elizondo also said that the new director should be someone who understands the story of "Princess Diaries 3" and who better to take on that than Anne Hathaway?
