Fans who loved Shannon Purser on "Stranger Things" will get to see her on the small screen again. The actress has just joined the cast of "Riverdale" on The CW. She will be playing the role of Ethel Muggs, who has been depicted for ages in the comics as Jughead Jones' lovesick admirer.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Shannon Purser will play a different kind of Ethel Muggs in The CW adaptation of "Riverdale." She won't be pining for Jughead, but instead will have a different love interest in the series.
Ethel on "Riverdale" in The CW will also be buddies with Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes). They will bond over their common desire to get back at the town bully, Reggie Mantle (Ross Butler).
"Riverdale" is based off the famous "Archie" comics, but the TV adaptation will take on a different tone than its original source. Instead of a light-hearted story about American teenagers, the show will be a dark drama-thriller with a few comedic elements. The mystery on "Riverdale" will be sparked by the death of a young man named Jason Blossom, which will rock the once sleepy town.
Bustle reports that the tone of "Riverdale" is much like old shows such as "Twin Peaks" and "Gossip Girl." Producers promised that each of the characters in the series have their deep and dark secrets, which will be explored and unfolded as the episodes progress.
"Riverdale" is headlined by KJ Apa (Archie Andrews) and Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones). Aside from Purser, Reinhart, Mendes and Butler, also joining them are Ashleigh Murray (Josie McCoy), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), Cody Kearsley (Moose Mason), Sarah Habel (Ms. Gundy), Madchen Amick (Alice Cooper), Luke Perry (Fred Andrews) and Colin Lawrence (Coach Clayton). Robin Givens is the latest cast addition as the town mayor, per Deadline.
"Riverdale" is scheduled to premiere on The CW during midseason. The network has yet to announce its actual air date.
