Just days after UFC President Dana White announced the first confirmed fight for UFC 205 in New York, it was recently revealed that the welterweight bout between top contender Donald Cerrone and former division champion Robbie Lawler, will no longer happen.
The highly anticipated card for the UFC's first major event in Madison Square Garden is still kept under wraps, and so far, no fight for the main card has been announced by the UFC until White made the previous announcement that Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone and "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler would face off in the historic event, but just days later, Lawler pulled out if the fight due to health concerns.
The welterweight bout between Lawler and Cerrone was one that fans were craving for, a fight between two of the most aggressive and fan-friendly strikers, and would be the turning point for either contenders' careers.
According to MMA Fighting, Lawler told the UFC that he would need a little more to recover after being devastatingly knocked out by Tyron Woodley, in just 2 minutes of the very first round, thus losing his prized welterweight belt.
Cerrone revealed that Lawler personally told him that he wouldn't be able to compete in the UFC 205 event, due to wanting to heal up a bit more before heading in to another big fight. According to Fox Sports, Lawler himself went to Cerrone to tell him man-to-man, and that he didn't Cerrone to find out through Dana White or the internet that the fight would be called off. Cerrone also admitted that a little bit of the mixed martial arts fan inside of him, saying that he wanted a fight between himself and Lawler, because it would be a great one.
UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in New York, still lacks a main card, aside from a few rumors suggesting that New York's own Al Iaquinta will be on it. The historic event will take place on November 12, 2016.
