Marijuana News Update: Denver to Vote on Social Marijuana Consumption

Colorado marijuana legalization already paved a way for a more accessible medical and recreational marijuana. The marijuana legalization also managed to provide better revenue for the state as the marijuana tax already reached billions, which was used to create schools, shelters and even provide scholarship assistance. As of the latest update in regards to the marijuana legalization, it was announced that Denver will get to vote for the social use of marijuana on Thursday.

The social marijuana will provide pot smokers a venue to enjoy recreational marijuana in public places such as bars and other common public areas. Though this may seem interesting for tourists and local marijuana lovers, it was announced that the first efforts in having this bill reach the ballots were already scrapped at it was discovered that the first petition was not able to reach the target signatures as it was found that the majority of those who signed were non-locals.

NORML proposed social marijuana consumption, which is solely targeting bars, restaurants and pubs, but the team failed to meet the needed signature requirement according to High Times. In lieu of the team's first attempt, Dan Hancock of the city Marijuana policy spokesperson sheds a light in giving the petition for social marijuana use another chance to make it to the ballots.

"We look forward to the opportunity to continue exploring this issue and to the large, broad-ranging community conversation that needs to happen around social consumption of marijuana," Hancock stated on an email.

Denver Post announced that marijuana smokers will get to decide as to whether they would allow marijuana consumption in bars and other public places. One of the backers, Kayvan Khalatbari of Denver Relief Consulting stated that it takes 4,726 valid signature for them to be able to support the movement in having social marijuana consumption implemented.

"It's going to be an effort of these businesses and a lot of the cannabis industry," Kayvan Khalatbari said. "We already have some of the bigger names of the cannabis industry" giving customers leaflets about the initiative. We're really looking forward to engaging every single stakeholder - pro, con or neutral on this."
