UFC Champion Tyrone Woodley will defend his welterweight belt for the first time against Stephen Thompson in one of the most historic events in mixed martial arts history, in the famed Madison Square Garden in New York, for UFC 205.
There have been plenty of concerns regarding the main card for UFC 205, with every fight being booked for the supposedly epic main card was scrapped, starting with the welterweight fight between Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone and former champion "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler. Lawyer pulled out of the fight, wanting to fully recover from the knockout loss that cost him his title. Now, the event's main card has been set for a must see bout between Tyrone Woodley and #2 ranked welterweight Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson.
Woodley will be put to quite the test in his first title defense against Thompson, as the challenger has looked invincible coming in to the fight, as he is currently on a 7 fight winning streak and has not lost a match since 2013. According to ESPN, Woodley lobbied for big name "money fights" against former champion Georges St. Pierre and top contender Nick Diaz, but the UFC instead, gave him Thompson for his first defense as champion.
Tension begins to rise between the two top welterweights leading up to the UFC 205 fight, as Thompson recently called out Woodley prior to the announcement of their fight by saying that Woodley was scared to face him in the Octagon. Woodley fired back by saying that he doesn't respect Thompson as a man, claiming that both of them already knew that the fight was going to take place for over a month now, yet Thompson still keeps on talking to the media that Woodley was not willing to fight him, according to Fox Sports.
The UFC still has not announced the main event for UFC 205, which will be on November 12, 2016.
