Netflix is rebooting the 1965 cult TV classic "Lost in Space," which has been earmarked for a 2018 release and supports the company's bid to provide four-quadrant entertainment. Casting is already underway and the show has already picked its first three actors: Toby Stephens, Maxwell Jenkins & Taylor Russell.
Taylor Russell was the first one cast on "Lost in Space" on Netflix, where she will play Judy Robinson, Deadline reported. The actress is known for her previous work in "Falling Skies." Her character was played by Marta Kristen in the 60s TV version, while Heather Graham also portrayed the part in movie adaptation released in 1998.
Joining Russell in "Lost in Space" on Netflix is Maxwell Jenkins who will play Judy's younger brother, Will. Jenkins also appeared on another original Netflix series, "Sense8." His role was portrayed Bill Mumy in the original series and by Jack Johnson in the movie version.
Meanwhile, "Black Sails" star Toby Stephens has snagged the lead role on "Lost in Space" as John Robinson, Judy and Will's father. Guy Williams played the part in the original run and William Hurt portrayed the character in the movie. By the time work for the Netflix series begins, Stephens' commitment to "Black Sails" should have already ended as the show will air its fourth and final season in 2017, per TV Line.
"Lost in Space" on Netflix will have Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless handling the scripts, while Zack Estrin is the showrunner. The series follows a family sent by the U.S. government to colonize another planet within a five-year plan. However, things break down when a Dr. Zachary Smith causes the spaceship to travel off course. Netflix has yet to announce the actor who will play the villain.
As mentioned, "Lost in Space" is part of Netflix's four-quadrant entertainment, which aims to deliver shows that every age group will appreciate. "A Series of Unfortunate Event's" Neil Patrick Harris previously talked about what this quadrant was in a report from Parent Herald.
